Howard County gets funding for lightweight electric buses

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman announced that the county has received funding for a public transit project that will add three full-size, lightweight electric buses to the Howard Transit fleet for use in and around Columbia.

The buses’ batteries are renewed through ground-based inductive charging, without having to be plugged in to an outside source – the first time this method is being used in the U.S. for a public bus system.

The $4.7 million grant includes funding for the charging system, an information station, a transit shelter and advertising. Funds are coming from the federal and state governments and private-sector participants.
