Maryland cancels bidding on operating 2 MARC lines

BALTIMORE — Maryland has canceled the bidding on a contract to take over the MARC Camden and Brunswick lines from CSX, citing insufficient competition.

Transportation Secretary Beverly Swaim-Staley says the Maryland Transit Administration will revise its request for proposals in an effort to make it more attractive for bidders. She says that could take a couple of months.

The two MARC lines, which are owned and operated by CSX, have struggled to maintain on-time performance numbers. Swaim-Staley says the new operator will have to deal with issues including track problems, signal malfunctions and competition with freight traffic.

The Camden Line runs between Baltimore and Washington, while the Brunswick Line extends from Washington to Martinsburg, W.Va.
