PG County residents launch petition drive against Leslie Johnson

UPPER MARLBORO — Prince George’s County residents have started a petition aimed at preventing Leslie Johnson, who was elected to the County Council this month, from taking office after being arrested in a federal probe.

The Washington Post reported about the online effort on Thursday, and organizers plan to send a petition to the Maryland General Assembly and Gov. Martin O’Malley.

Johnson was arrested last week with her husband, Democratic County Executive Jack Johnson, after he allegedly accepted $15,000 from a developer and federal investigators tapping his phone heard him tell his wife to flush a $100,000 check down the toilet and hide $79,600 in her bra.

State election officials have said there is no state law to prevent Leslie Johnson from being sworn in Dec. 6.
