Chesapeake Bay Foundation applauds Obama drilling decision

ANNAPOLIS — The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says President Barack Obama made the right decision in not pursuing offshore drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico or along the East Coast.

The foundation says an oil spill could devastate the Chesapeake Bay’s crab industry, and offshore drilling poses unjustifiable risks to the bay, the region’s tourism economy and the many jobs that depend on clean water.

The administration had backed expanding offshore drilling earlier, in part to gain support for comprehensive climate legislation, which is no longer on the table. Under the revised plan, the Interior Department will not propose any new oil drilling along the East Coast and the eastern Gulf for at least the next seven years.
