Second fire breaks out in downtown Baltimore

Firefighters have extinguished an intense blaze that tore through two buildings in Baltimore’s cultural district, causing heavy damage to restaurants and offices.

Fire spokesman Chief Kevin Cartwright says the fire broke out in 800 block of Charles Street about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and escalated into a five-alarm blaze. Hours earlier, firefighters had been called to another five-alarm fire in the city’s adult-entertainment district.

Cartwright says firefighters have been able to extinguish the flames at the latest fire in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. He says more than 100 firefighters were called to the scene, and two suffered minor injuries.

Officials are investigating what caused both fires but do not think they are related.
