Susan Mitcheltree has been hired as senior client relationship manager by Berman McAleer, an independent comprehensive financial services firm in Baltimore. Mitcheltree was previously with Integrated Benefits Corp. She serves on the Government Relations Committee of the Financial Planning Association of Maryland, and is a certified financial planner and a registered representative and investment advisor representative with NFP Securities.


Gorfine, Schiller & Gardyn, of Owings Mills, has added to its staff: Theresa M. Higgins, a senior business valuator, previously was controller for firms in the restaurant, staff leasing and financial services industries. She is a CPA and a University of Maryland graduate. Nichol M. Moeller is a staff accountant in the small business department. The McDaniel College graduate previously was a staff accountant at a local accounting firm. Victoria Hitchcock is a staff auditor in the firm’s auditing department. She graduated from Towson University and worked at a local accounting firm where she prepared audits, financial statements and tax returns. Carole L. Hinton is an administrative assistant. She previously worked at an accounting firm in Mt. Airy. Garrett Elligson is an intern in the tax department. He is a student at the University of Baltimore. Sylvester B. Savoy Jr. is an intern in the audit department. He is a student at Towson University.


Loyola University Maryland, in Baltimore, has been named among the colleges and universities receiving the 2010 Community Engagement Classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The classification recognizes institutions demonstrating a significant commitment to their communities through service, curricular engagement, partnerships, and other forms of outreach.


Matthew Spencer and S. Thomas (Tom) Smith, of EBL Engineers, of Baltimore, recently received their Maryland professional engineering licenses. Spencer, who has been with EBL Engineers for 12 years, is also a certified geothermal systems designer/installer. Smith received his bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland in 1982 and has been with EBL Engineers for 10 years.

Health Care

Dr. Edward A. Sausville, associate director for clinical research at the University of Maryland’s Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, has been named an editor in chief of the journal Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology. Before becoming a cancer researcher and professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Sausville was associate director of the National Cancer Institute’s Developmental Therapeutics Program after serving as an attending physician at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bethesda and Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.


Ken Kaisen has been hired as chief technology officer and chief information officer of Vertis Communications, of Baltimore, a provider of advertising, direct marketing and interactive solutions. Kaisen most recently served as president and CEO at ClearMomentum. Before that, he was vice president and general manager of consulting and systems integration for Avaya Corp. Kaisen has also held technology and general management positions at Xerox Corp., and was the CIO for New England Business Services.
