MARC trains halted after train fatally strikes person

GAITHERSBURG — Three MARC trains traveling into Washington have been halted after one fatally struck a pedestrian.

Montgomery County Police spokesman Cpl. Dan Friz says an 81-year-old man was hurrying across the train tracks Friday morning to try to board the train when he was struck. Friz says the train is currently at the station and also blocking South Summit Avenue, which is causing significant delays.

Maryland Transit Administration spokesman Dave Clark says two trains behind that one were also being held. Clark said he did not know how many people were affected.

Clark said Metro was honoring MARC tickets to take people from Shady Grove into Washington.
