Metro train evacuated for smoke, possible fire

FOREST GLEN — A Metro train has been evacuated after something caught fire and filled a tunnel with smoke near the Forest Glen station on the red line in Maryland.

Montgomery County fire department spokesman Capt. Oscar Garcia says firefighters were called to the station about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday. Passengers had all made it to the station and were evacuated. A train operator is being treated for smoke inhalation.

Garcia says train traffic has been halted in both directions near Forest Glen as firefighters investigate. Garcia says an initial report indicates the brakes of the train may have caught fire. But the fire was out when firefighters arrived.

Metro is directing passengers to shuttle buses between the Glenmont and Silver Spring stations.
