Under Armour Inc. announced Monday that it has been named the official footwear supplier for Major League Baseball, starting this spring. The multiyear agreement gives the Baltimore-based apparel maker worldwide rights to produce and distribute MLB logo-flanked cleats.
Under Armour baseball cleats with the silhouetted batter logo will be available in stores this month. Baltimore Orioles Right Fielder Nick Markakis, Boston Red Sox Pitcher Jonathan Papelbon and Washington Nationals Third Baseman Ryan Zimmerman already wear Under Armour gear.
Under Armour will launch a campaign to tout its cleats with print and digital advertisements using the MLB logo.
“We are excited to take our efforts in baseball to the next level,” Matt Mirchin, senior vice president of sports marketing for Under Armour, said in a statement Monday.
Howard Smith, senior vice president of licensing for MLB, said in a statement that Under Armour was picked for its attitude and dedication to performance sportswear.
Under Armour plans to reveal new cleats this spring designed for more traction and acceleration.
