O’Malley to testify on septics bill

ANNAPOLIS — Gov. Martin O’Malley is continuing his push to require high-end septic systems for new developments to fight pollution.

O’Malley, who surprised lawmakers when he announced support for the policy in his State of the State speech, is scheduled to testify in support of legislation on Friday.

On Wednesday, O’Malley waded into a polluted lake on the Eastern Shore to call attention to environmental problems caused by leaky septic systems.

The idea has run into resistance from lawmakers in both parties. Lawmakers have recommended studying the issue before moving ahead with parts of the bill they believe could stunt development.
