2 former Md. Govs., GOP Rep. oppose EPA bay rider

ANNAPOLIS — Two former Maryland governors and a former Republican congressman are among a group of 60 urging defeat of a budget amendment that would strip funding from federal efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay.

Former governors Harry Hughes and Parris Glendening and former Republican Rep. Wayne Gilchrest signed a letter sent Friday to Rep. Steny Hoyer, urging defeat of a rider on a pending budget bill.

Democrats and Republicans are trying to reach agreement on billions of dollars in spending cuts in a budget compromise to avoid a federal government shutdown. But there’s no visible movement on GOP policy riders attacking Obama’s health care and financial reform laws, cutting taxpayer funds to Planned Parenthood and reversing a host of Obama’s environmental policies.
