Read any healthy living magazine and you’re bound to find suggestions for staying fit while working a desk job. In February, Melissa Goldmeier, a law clerk in the General Master’s Office at the Baltimore City Circuit Court, decided to take on that challenge by replacing her desk chair with a stability ball. “I just feel like it was really better than sitting in a chair in terms of the health benefits,” Goldmeier said. “I felt so sluggish all the time. Once I started sitting on the ball I realized I had a lot more energy.” After Goldmeier’s seating swap, three officemates decided to get on the ball. Goldmeier said after a day on the stability ball she can feel that she’s strengthened her core muscles, and others have said their abdominal muscles hurt after trying the seat. The only real drawback is that the ball needs to have air pumped into it every other day.
