Gov. O’Malley announces Maryland housing initiative

ANNAPOLIS — Gov. Martin O’Malley has announced an initiative to increase rental housing opportunities for low-income disabled residents.

The public-private partnership announced Monday includes $1 million over two years from the Weinberg Foundation. The money will be used to cover capital costs in developments. The first Weinberg units are expected to be available for occupancy in late 2012.

O’Malley is making other housing initiative announcements on Monday. The governor and Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown are hosting a foreclosure prevention event in Bowie to discuss an Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program. On Monday afternoon, O’Malley and Brown will attend the 20th annual Affordable Housing Conference of Montgomery County in Bethesda.
