Long-term health care costs rising for Maryland seniors

Long-term care costs are rising faster in Maryland than nationally, according to a survey by Richmond, Va.-based Genworth Financial Inc.

The median cost of an assisted living facility in Maryland increased by 6.2 percent annually over the past six years to $39,600. Nationally, the median cost rose by 6 percent annually to $39,135.

A private nursing home room in Maryland costs $89,972 a year, an annual rise of 4.1 percent.

Nationally, the cost rose by 4.4 percent to $77,745 a year. Home health care costs in Maryland increased over six years by 3.5 percent annually to $20 an hour, compared to the national median hourly rate of $19.
