WASHINGTON — About 3,400 customers in the Washington region are without power amid a heat wave.
As of 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, Pepco was reporting on its website that about 3,320 customers were without power in Washington. Another 220 customers lacked power in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.
The outages have prompted the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to close. The agency says only emergency personnel are to report Wednesday at the commission’s headquarters on First Street in northeast.
D.C. school officials say J.O. Wilson Elementary School in northeast is also closed Wednesday due to the outage.
Pepco spokesman Clay Anderson says crews are working to repair the outage, which began Tuesday afternoon.
The National Weather Service says temperatures are expected to reach into the mid-90s on Wednesday.
