Gov. O’Malley announces $4.8M in AmeriCorps grants

ANNAPOLIS — Gov. Martin O’Malley says Maryland nonprofits will receive more than $4.8 million in federal AmeriCorps grants.

A news release from the governor’s office says the grants will help students learn to read, improve urban vacant lots, help clean up the Chesapeake Bay and help nonprofits in volunteer management.

Six nonprofits will receive a total of more than $2.5 million in funding to support more than 500 AmeriCorps members through the grants: Civic Works Service Corps; Community Art Collaborative; Maryland Conservation Corps; Project CHANGE; Teach for America-Baltimore and Volunteer Maryland.

The Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism will announce additional AmeriCorps grants supported by $2.3 million in AmeriCorps funding in July.
