UM Medical Center to “top off” trauma tower

The University of Maryland Medical Center is celebrating the completion of its new trauma care tower.

The medical center plans to hold a “topping off” ceremony Thursday to mark completion of the nine-story, $160 million trauma and critical care tower at Lombard and Penn streets.

The topping-off ceremony is a tradition in the construction industry that marks the placement of the highest element of a building. The University of Maryland says Thursday’s ceremony will include the placement of a flag and a small evergreen tree atop the building.
