Baltimore Gas and Electric says it has restored power to tens of thousands of customers in central Maryland.
The utility says more than 50,000 customers lost power as strong thunderstorms moved through the region late Thursday night. The majority were in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore city and Baltimore County.
BGE had restored service to more than 48,000 customers by midmorning Friday, while about 6,000 remained in the dark. BGE says the vast majority will have the lights back on by Friday evening but warns that new outages are possible because of the extreme heat.
A meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Sterling, Va., says there were no indications of tornadoes with Thursday night’s storm.
