Maryland plans to begin evaluating teachers based in part on how well students have learned their lessons.
The Maryland Council for Educator Effectiveness says 50 percent of a teacher’s job rating will be based on student performance. The council was appointed by the governor last year to develop a new teacher and principal evaluation system.
All the teachers on the council voted against the new system.
The evaluation system will undergo revisions and take effect in the 2013-2014 school year. It will be tested in seven districts and then continue statewide the following year. The seven districts are Baltimore City and Baltimore, Prince George’s, St. Mary’s, Kent, Charles and Queen Anne’s counties.
