Dr. Adel A.F. Mahmoud and Dr. Edward M. Connor Jr. recently were elected to the board of directors of GenVec, a biopharmaceutical company in Gaithersburg. Mahmoud is a professor at Princeton University in the Department of Molecular Biology and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. In 2006, he retired as the chief medical advisor, vaccines and infectious diseases, and a member of the management committee of Merck & Co., after six years as president of Merck Vaccines. He is chairman of the National Institutes of Health’s Blue Ribbon Panel to Advise on the Risk Assessment of the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories and of the National Academy of Sciences’ Committee on the Prevention of Proliferation of Biological Weapons. Connor is director of the Office of Innovation Development and Investigational Therapeutics at Children’s National Medical Center and a professor of pediatrics, microbiology, immunology and tropical medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. From 2004 to 2008, he was the chief medical officer and executive vice president of MedImmune, Connor is chief medical officer for 3-V Biosciences, a biopharmaceutical company for the treatment of infectious diseases. He is also the Children’s National Representative on the VP-Pharma board of directors.

John P. McDaniel, chairman of Hickory Ridge Group, a private health care consulting and development organization, has been appointed to the executive advisory board of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States, of Rockville. McDaniel has served as chief executive officer of MedStar Health, president and chief executive officer of Washington Hospital Center Corp., president of Maryland Health Care System, and president of Lutheran Hospital of Maryland.

Barcoding Inc., of Baltimore, a provider of mobility solutions, recently hired Jeffery Zinn as general counsel and Regis Fitzgibbon as solutions architect. Zinn will create Barcoding’s corporate legal department and support corporate initiatives in intellectual property, while Fitzgibbon will support and enhance Barcoding’s enterprise client base. Zinn has practiced business and intellectual property law for 15 years at boutique and large law firms; previously, he worked as in-house counsel at the Baltimore-area offices of Fila USA, Inc., and ViPS Inc., now a division of General Dynamics. Fitzgibbon previously was a pre-sales consultant and application engineer for Kronos Inc., and, most recently, Zenith Infotech.
