NAACP asks for probe of Anne Arundel police

The Anne Arundel County branch of the NAACP is asking for a Justice Department to probe into the hiring and disciplinary practices of the county’s police department, saying black officers have reported disparate treatment.

The president of the county’s branch of the NAACP, Jacqueline Allsup, sent a letter Monday to Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., asking her to make a formal request for an investigation by the Justice Department. Allsup says efforts by the officers to address their complaints within the department have so far failed.

The police department said in a statement that it does not tolerate discrimination and is committed to diversity. The department says that 47 of its 635 officers are black.
