Presidential historian appears in federal court

A presidential historian charged with conspiring to steal historical documents from archives in several states will remain in federal custody over the weekend.

A judge will wait to consider prosecutors’ recommendation that Barry Landau remain in custody on Monday to give pretrial officials time to review his case.

Prosecutors said Friday they are concerned that Landau poses a flight risk and may try to destroy evidence or influence others involved in the case if he is released.

The judge has yet to rule on an agreement that Landau’s assistant Jason Savedoff be released to his mother on $250,000 bail.
