The U.S. Department of Energy has selected Columbia-based specialty chemical company W.R. Grace & Co. to conduct one of 16 research projects nationwide aimed at improving the efficiency and reducing the cost of advanced carbon-capture systems at coal-fired power plants.
DOE is giving Grace $3 million to fund about 80 percent of the cost of the project.
The 16 selections combined are valued at $41 million over three years.
Other participants are located in California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New York state, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington state.
