Germantown-based Earth Networks finds correlation between lightning, storm path

Earth Networks Inc. of Germantown, the owner and operator of WeatherBug, the country’s largest weather network, said it is actively tracking the path of Hurricane Irene as it approaches the East Coast by providing an early look into Irene’s total lightning activity.

This is the first time, the company said, that there is an established network in place to continuously monitor total lightning activity for the entire projected track of the hurricane.

The Earth Networks Total Lightning Network is a dense network of broadband lightning sensors that monitor activity in real time, to show a connection between lightning and the increasing strength of a hurricane.
