Utility companies say about 530,000 homes and businesses in the mid-Atlantic region are without electricity due to Hurricane Irene’s high winds.
The outages early Monday were spread across northern Virginia, Delaware, the Delmarva Peninsula and central and southern Maryland. The companies say it could take several days to fully restore electricity.
Baltimore Gas and Electric says about 366,000 customers were without power at 10 a.m. Monday.
Pepco was reporting 62,000 customers without electricity in Washington and its Maryland suburbs. That includes about 15,000 in the District of Columbia.
The Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative says it has about 44,000 customers out.
Delmarva Power is reporting about 41,000 customers without power.
Dominion Power says more than 18,000 customers in northern Virginia don’t have electricity.
