Union defends P.G. officers charged in beating of UM student

UPPER MARLBORO — The president of the Prince George’s County police officers union says the public shouldn’t rush to judgment against two officers charged with beating a University of Maryland student.

Officers James Harrison and Reginald Baker were indicted Tuesday on assault charges.

They’re accused of beating student John McKenna following Maryland’s victory over Duke in March 2010.

Union president Vince Canales says in a statement Wednesday that the officers have had long and exemplary careers, and that it would be unfair to prejudge the case.

The indictments were announced by Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks. A Justice Department spokeswoman said Wednesday that the department was continuing to investigate the case as well.
