UPPER MARLBORO — Nine people have been charged with smuggling illegal cigarettes into Maryland.
Nearly 15,000 packs of contraband cigarettes were seized as part of the investigation. Officials say the indictments announced Thursday in Prince George’s County are part of an effort to crack down on a growing and lucrative tobacco smuggling industry.
The smugglers make money on the different tax rates from state to state. The tax rate in Maryland is $2 per pack. In Virginia, it’s 30 cents.
