Jury selection begins in Currie corruption trial

Jury selection started Monday morning in the trial of state Sen. Ulysses Currie in federal court in Baltimore.

Prosecutors allege that after the Prince George’s County Democrat became chairman of the committee that steers state spending, he asked to be put on the payroll of Shoppers Food Warehouse and agreed to use his office to benefit the chain.

At a hearing last week, attorneys for Currie said he was being treated for cancer and given medication that made him “fuzzy” during an FBI investigation three years ago.

The trial could last several weeks.
