Ciena’s selected for first optical network in Eastern Europe

Ciena Corp. of Linthicum, a manufacturer of fiber-optic network equipment, announced it has been selected by Eurotranstelecom, a Ukranian telecomm operator and long-standing Ciena client, for the first commercial deployment in Eastern Europe of a 100G optical network.

The project is part of ETT’s high-capacity optical network covering key regions in Ukraine and linking it to Russian, Polish, Hungarian and Slovakian networks to support carriers’ growing requirement for high-speed connectivity.

The 100G link is 350 miles long and connects the capital Kiev to Kharkov in the northeast of the country. Other links to major Ukranian regional centers such as Lvov, Donetsk, Odessa and Dnepropetrovsk will follow.
