Coast Guard to replace landmark Ocean City jetty tower

OCEAN CITY — The Coast Guard has plans to replace the landmark tower that sat at the entrance to the Ocean City Inlet until it was ripped away by Hurricane Irene.

The Daily Times of Salisbury reports the tower was swept away when the storm came ashore in August and has not been found since.

Coast Guard Chief Aric Deuel of the Ocean City station says the tower will be replaced with a newer model of the same design. As soon as the money is approved, construction will begin.

Though many commercial boats now use GPS, Public Works Director Hal Adkins says a replacement is important. He says many locals in the boating business relied on the tower’s foghorn, especially during bad weather.
