Closing statements set for Currie case

Attorneys are scheduled to make closing arguments in the bribery trial of state Sen. Ulysses Currie in federal court.
The lawyers’ statements are set for Wednesday morning in U.S. District Court in Baltimore.
Currie, D-Prince George’s, is accused of selling his influence as chairman of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee to do political favors for Shoppers Food Warehouse.
The company paid Currie more than $245,000 between 2003 and 2008. While Currie reported the money on tax returns, he did not disclose the payments in state financial disclosure forms.
The senator is charged with bribery, extortion, conspiracy and making a false statement.
Former Shoppers executives, including former president William J. White and former vice president for real estate development R. Kevin Small, also are on trial.
