Annapolis seeking to become friendlier to wildlife

ANNAPOLIS — First lady Katie O’Malley is helping kick off a campaign to make Annapolis friendlier for wildlife.
The campaign seeks to certify Maryland’s capital as a Community Wildlife Habitat. The program is run by the National Wildlife Federation and is designed to provide habitat for wildlife through sustainable gardening in backyards, parks, community gardens, school grounds and other areas.
The Government House garden, for example, now houses a bee hive for honey and a water fountain that attracts birds, as well trees, brush and shrubs that provide shelter for animals and insects. The garden also has three rain barrels to catch storm water and reduce water use.
O’Malley plans to appear Monday afternoon at the Boatyard Bar & Grill for the kickoff.
