Thirty awards were handed out to mid-Atlantic remodelers at a ceremony in Linthicum Heights Thursday in categories including accessible living, historic restoration and specialty details.
The Remodeling Council of the Home Builders Association of Maryland, a Baltimore-based charter organization of the National Association of Home Builders, distributed the awards to winners of the Remodeling Award of Excellence competition at the Westin Baltimore Washington Airport.
Twenty-nine of the awards were distributed among 20 companies, all but one of them for remodeling jobs in Maryland. Many of the companies that received awards, such as Delbert Adams Construction Group of Towson, awarded for a kitchen remodel in Baltimore as well as an outdoor living remodel in Cockeysville, are based in the Baltimore metropolitan area.
Bob Weickgenannt, who owns Columbia-based Starcom Design/Build, said his company submitted three remodels it had done this year for consideration in August, after winning three awards in 2010. He expressed pride in his firm’s two winning projects.
“I think the true excellence in design of the master bath … [was] just outstanding, and the bar area was something you’d see in a high-priced hotel,” Weickgenannt said of his company’s work on an Elkridge home, which won a whole-house remodel award. “The exercise room on the first floor was something very unique, and I think that caught the judges’ eye.”
Cheryl Crowther, the Harrisburg, Pa., showroom manager for Upper Marlboro’s Thos. Somerville Co., received an individual award for “Remodelers Associate of the Year.” Crowther’s award was the only one presented at the ceremony to be given to an individual rather than a firm.
The only remodeling work conducted outside of Maryland to garner an award from the HBAM was also done by the only company not headquartered in Maryland to win. Haymarket, Va.-based Signature Cos. received an award for a whole-house remodel in Leesburg, Va. The Leesburg renovation was also the only job done in the Washington metropolitan area that received an award.
A panel of remodeling contractors from the Baltimore area judged work submitted for consideration. This team assessed work on its creativity, difficulty level, quality and cost value, among other properties, according to an HBAM release.
The Remodeling Award of Excellence competition was first held in 1990, and it has been an annual event for the HBAM since then. Thursday’s awards ceremony marked the conclusion of its 21st edition.
