O’Malley appoints new SHA head

ANNAPOLIS — Gov. Martin O’Malley has appointed a new head of the Maryland State Highway Administration.

The governor announced the appointment of Melinda Peters on Thursday.

Peters will be the first female head of the agency. For the past six years, she has served as director of the Intercounty Connector Project.

O’Malley described her in a statement as a talented engineer and an exceptional manager.

The SHA is one of the largest agencies in state government. It has an annual budget of $1.1 billion and a staff of 3,100. Peters joined the agency in 1995 as a project engineer in the highway design division.
