Md. senators write FERC about natural gas proposal

MYERSVILLE — Maryland’s two U.S. senators are asking federal regulators to pay close attention to residents’ concerns about a proposed natural-gas compressor station near Myersville.

The letter from Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin follows similar letters by county officials and Rep. Roscoe Bartlett. The compressor station is part of a Dominion Transmission project to meet natural gas demand in the region. The station would boost the flow of gas through underground pipes during peak demand periods.

A proposal for a compressor station in the Middletown area was abandoned following local opposition. The two senators say residents have expressed concerns about the proximity of the Myersville location to populated areas, noting an explosion at similar facility in Pennsylvania last month forced the evacuation of dozens of homes.
