Adam S. Zarren has joined Saul Ewing in Baltimore as a partner in the firm’s business and finance department and corporate group. Zarren advises individuals and growing small and middle-market businesses, as well as large international firms, on general corporate, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, intellectual property, government contract, contractual, real estate, and other business- and personal-related matters. Over the past nine years he has acted as general counsel for several clients. Zarren previously was employed by Neuberger, Quinn, Gielen, Rubin & Gibber, of Baltimore, and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield.

Christian W. Kintigh has been hired as an associate with Morgan Carlo Downs & Everton, of Hunt Valley. His practice focuses on the defense of health care institutions and professionals against medical malpractice claims, the defense of employers and insurers before the Maryland Workers’ Compensation Commission, and general liability defense. Kintigh has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and a J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Before joining the firm, he served as law clerk to the Honorable George L. Russell III of the Circuit Court for Baltimore City.

Aimei Xi has been hired by Taylor & Ryan, of Baltimore, to represent individuals seeking permanent residence based on waivers, and researchers, professors, individuals of extraordinary ability and multinational managers. She will also provide representation relating to visas. Xi, a native of China, most recently practiced immigration law in San Antonio, Texas.

Laurie Hansen, of Gallagher & Hansen, of Catonsville, recently received the Baltimore County Bar Association’s Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award. Hansen has volunteered for 15 years with Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, and has represented low-income clients through the Baltimore County Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Program. She has a J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law.

Carla Stone Witzel, a member of Gordon, Feinblatt, Rothman, Hoffberger & Hollander, of Baltimore, has been named by The Best Lawyers in America as the 2012 Baltimore Financial Services Regulation Law Lawyer of the Year. Carla is a member in the firm’s financial services and e.discovery groups. Witzel’s practice focuses on consumer financial services, banking, and e-commerce. She received a J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law.

Several attorneys at Rosenberg | Martin | Greenberg, of Baltimore, have been selected for the 2012 edition of Maryland Super Lawyers: Benjamin Rosenberg, Gerard Martin, Barry Greenberg, Stuart Rombro, Gerard Gaeng, Douglas Furlong, Stanley Fine, Newt Fowler, Steven Wrobel, Caroline Ciraolo, Andrew Baida, William Hallam and David Wyand. Rosenberg, Martin and Ciraolo were selected as Top 100 Maryland lawyers, and Ciraolo was among the Top 50 women lawyers. Joshua Bradley, Brian Crepeau, Paul Flannery, Caroline Hecke and Jim Liang were named Rising Stars.

Four partners in the Baltimore office of McGuireWoods have been named Maryland Super Lawyers for 2012: Alan C. Cason, Ava E. Lias-Booker, Patrick M. Shelley and Douglas M. Topolski. Three attorneys were named Rising Stars: John C. Armstrong, James E. Van Horn, and Sung B. “Ben” Yhim.

Several attorneys at Adelberg, Rudow, Dorf & Hendler, of Baltimore and Ellicott City, have been selected as 2012 Maryland Super Lawyers: David B. Applefeld, Michael G. Hendler, F. Kirk Kolodner, Jerald B. Lurie, Marc B. Noren, Andrew Radding and David B. Rudow. Named Rising Stars were Carol G. Cooper and Robert M. Horne.

Duane Morris Government Affairs LLC and GSP Consulting Corp. have formed Duane Morris Government Strategies LLC, which beginning Jan. 1 will operate as an ancillary business of international law firm Duane Morris, which has offices in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., across the U.S. and in other countries. The new company will provide lobbying, grant writing, development finance consulting, media relations management, grassroots campaigning and community outreach from offices in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and other cities.

Sheela Murthy, founder and president of the Murthy Law Firm, of Owings Mills, which focuses on immigration, has joined the board of directors of Cancer Treatment Centers of America’s, Eastern Regional Medical Center. The for-profit organization is in Philadelphia.

Thomas M. Meachum, a partner in Carney, Kelehan, Bresler, Bennett & Scherr, of Columbia, has joined the board of directors of the Association of Community Services of Howard County.

Melissa L. Mackiewicz, an associate in the Baltimore office of DLA Piper, has been selected to receive the Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for 2012 for the Out-of-State Florida Bar member next month. Mackiewicz is a trial lawyer who practices primarily in corporate, securities, real estate and business litigation and arbitration. She practices throughout the country. Since joining the firm in 2002, she has devoted more than 100 hours each year to pro bono projects.
