Cartridge on Wheels recently was named Small Business of the Year by the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce. The business delivers ink and toner to businesses and organizations while helping monitor their needs. Company owner Bruce Kanner won the chamber’s volunteer of the year award in 2010. He also works with one of the chamber’s Direct Connect groups.

Biomedical

Claire Zhang has been hired by Advanced BioScience Laboratories, of Rockville, to lead its downstream bioprocessing group. Zhang will direct development and optimization programs for the biomedical contract research and manufacturing organization’s commercial and government good manufacturing practice manufacturing clients. She most recently was the head of downstream development and manufacturing at Intercell, where she worked on multiple vaccine platforms including recombinant proteins and virus-like particles. Zhang has also worked for Human Genome Sciences and IBEX Pharmaceuticals.

Education

Joseph R. Urgo, president of St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and his wife, Lesley Dretar Urgo, have committed $100,000 to the college’s upcoming comprehensive campaign. They previously donated $20,000 to the school. The goals of the campaign focus on expanding available resources for need-based financial aid and strengthening academic programs. The Urgos designated $75,000 to a need-based scholarship fund, and the remaining $25,000 to the St. Mary’s College Arboretum.

Transportation

Roadnet Technologies, a Baltimore-based vehicle routing, scheduling and fleet management technology company, won in the Technology category in the Association for Corporate Growth–Maryland Chapter’s 2011 Deal of the Year competition. Roadnet’s fleet management applications and logistics software provide territory and street-level route plans, multi-stop vehicle routing and scheduling, wireless dispatch, vehicle telematics, fuel management, and real-time vehicle GPS tracking.
