Jury selection under way in murder trial of U.Va. lacrosse player

George Huguely

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Jury selection is under way in the trial of a University of Virginia lacrosse player accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, a player on the women’s lacrosse team.

George Huguely V, of Chevy Chase, pleaded not guilty Monday in Charlottesville Circuit Court to first-degree murder, robbery, burglary, breaking and entering, grand larceny and murder in the commission of a felony. Twelve jurors and three alternates are to be selected from 160 people. No jurors were seated as of midday.

Yeardley Love was found dead in her apartment on May 3, 2010. Police said Huguely told investigators he kicked in Love’s bedroom door and then shook her, causing her head to hit a wall several times.

Attorneys for the 24-year-old Huguely contend the 22-year-old Love, of Cockeysville, died accidentally.
