Republican candidates vie for Md.’s 37 delegates in primary

ANNAPOLIS — Republican presidential candidates are vying for 37 delegates in Maryland’s primary, with Mitt Romney expected to fare well in a state that’s home to many moderate GOP members.

Candidates have been making campaign appearances in the state in advance of Tuesday’s primary. Maryland is getting a rare moment in the Republican spotlight because of a nominating contest that has extended into April.

Romney has the support of many top Republicans in Maryland, including former Gov. Robert Ehrlich and two of the state’s three super-delegates.

Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas congressman Ron Paul all campaigned in the state, while former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania didn’t, focusing instead on Wisconsin. That state and the District of Columbia are also holding primaries Tuesday.

A pro-Romney super PAC spent more than $450,000 to air television ads in Maryland.
