Hagerstown aims for usable new ballpark by 2015

HAGERSTOWN — The city of Hagerstown is pushing to have a downtown minor-league baseball stadium built by the 2015 season.

Mayor Robert Bruchey tells the Herald-Mail of Hagerstown that he wants to proceed with formal architectural designs despite the lack of a funding commitment from the state and a long-term contract with the Hagerstown Suns.

The Suns are a Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. They currently play in 80-year-old Municipal Stadium.

The team is also being courted by Winchester, Va.

The Hagerstown City Council was scheduled to discuss the proposed timeline for the $30 million project Tuesday night. It envisions state funding for about one-third of the cost.

The city and Washington County have agreed to provide local public funding of up to $16 million.
