CUMBERLAND — A Cumberland man is fighting local land-use regulations in hopes of opening a bed-and-breakfast in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that Donelly Bohrer will get a hearing before the local zoning board of appeals on Wednesday.

Bohrer says he bought 40 acres along the canal last year that includes a renovated five-bedroom home. He says he wants to create a campground on the land and offer lodging and meeting space in the house.

City planners say camping would be OK but zoning regulations prohibit turning the house into an inn or conference center.

Bohrer says he can’t develop the campground unless he’s permitted to use the house for lodging.
