Group claims Frederick Co. natural gas unit would block battlefield view

MYERSVILLE — Opponents of a proposed natural gas compressor station in Myersville claim the unit would block views of the South Mountain Civil War battlefield.

The Frederick News-Post reported Tuesday that a group called Myersville Citizens for a Rural Community objected to the plan in a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The agency is considering Dominion Energy’s application to build the compressor station on 21 acres near Interstate 70. The company says the unit is needed to boost the flow of gas through underground pipes during peak demand periods.

The critics contend that the station would devalue state efforts to preserve the Civil War site about a half-mile away.

They also say it would be dangerous, noisy and environmentally harmful.

A public hearing is set for June 20.
