AAA: D.C. traffic cameras revenue increasing

WASHINGTON — AAA Mid-Atlantic says the District of Columbia’s use of speed and red-light cameras brought in a record $55 million in fiscal 2011 and could generate even more revenue this year.

The auto club said Thursday that the city has already issued about $40 million in automated enforcement tickets this fiscal year, which began Oct. 1.

AAA says the city issued about 419,520 automated speeding tickets and about 52,795 automated red-light tickets in the first seven months of the fiscal year.

It says fewer tickets were issued in fiscal 2011 than the year before, but that the city still generated record revenue because fines were increased and more people paid them.

AAA filed a Freedom of Information Act request to get the information.
