The Maryland Public Service Commission has imposed a $60,000 civil penalty on Viridian Energy PA LLC, a Connecticut-based retail energy supplier, for consumer protection violations.
The PSC said Viridian, which has more than 140,000 customers in Maryland, engaged in false, misleading and deceptive advertising and solicitations, including untrue statements about its relationship with utility companies, false promises of customer savings, and inaccurate claims that customers were not required to sign a contract.
The PSC noted that Viridian has taken steps to correct the violations, including ceasing door-to-door marketing, replacing “no contract” statements with appropriate language, and taking measures to train and educate its associates.
