Editorial Advisory Board: Welcome, Dean Weich

Dean Ronald Weich officially begins his term as dean of the University of Baltimore School of Law next month facing many daunting challenges and many more opportunities. As the legal community gathers for the Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Bar Association, we take this opportunity to welcome Dean Weich and wish him every success.

Weich comes to UB from the Department of Justice, where he has been Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs since 2009. President Obama appointed him to that position from private practice as a partner in Zuckerman Spaeder LLP. Before that, he was Chief Counsel to Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) when Reid served as Majority and Minority Leader.

That was Weich’s second stint on Capitol Hill. He rose to Chief Counsel to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on the Senate Judiciary Committee from General Counsel to the senator’s Labor and Human Resources Committee. Weich first came to Washington in the late 1980s to serve as legislative liaison for the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Previously, he had been an assistant district attorney in Manhattan, a position he took right out of Yale Law School.

Weich takes the reins at UB Law at a time of great hope and expectations. Last fall, the law school reached a landmark financial agreement with the university administration (Daily Record, Oct. 18, 2011), and it is scheduled to move into a state-of-the-art building next year. At the same time, however, law school applications are down nationwide and law schools are under fire everywhere for high tuition rates and student debt loads in light of a depressed job market for graduates.

These would be tough problems for any new dean, not to mention one who is brand new to the legal academy. Still, UB President Robert Bogomolny sees Weich as the right person for the job, bringing “leadership with integrity and vision” that will energize students, faculty, staff and alumni. We congratulate Dean Weich on his appointment and look forward to his assuming his duties at UB Law.
