PRINCESS ANNE — Princess Anne Town Commissioner Garland Hayward is calling for tighter screening of prospective businesses in an industrial park following the discovery of a reddish brown substance in a stormwater pond.

Princess Anne and Somerset County officials told The Daily Times of Salisbury that they are waiting for state environmental regulators to identify the substance found near a biodiesel plant in the industrial park.

State environmental officials began investigating after receiving a report in March of an oily substance and odors from a stormwater ditch. The substance was traced to a pond at the plant that makes biodiesel from chicken waste and used cooking oil.

The county’s sewer authority is also awaiting test results, saying Greenlight Biofuels has asked the agency to accept 30,000 gallons of stormwater containing the substance
