Spirit Airlines moving operations to BWI from Reagan National

Spirit Airlines will begin service from Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Dallas/Fort Worth beginning in September, officials from the airport and airline announced Tuesday.

Spirit, which has offered flights to Fort Lauderdale out of Reagan National Airport for nine years, promotes itself as an airline offering “ultra low” fares. It will end operations at Reagan Sept. 5, and resume at BWI on Sept. 6.

“It gives the customers more options,” said BWI Executive Director Paul J. Wiedefeld, “It adds more competition … In general people want the lowest fares they can get.”

For Spirit, relocating to BWI creates opportunities for growth. The daily service to Dallas/Fort Worth represents the first addition, and Mark Kopczak, Spirit’s senior director of network planning, said it is unlikely to be the last.

“We obviously know this region,”  Kopczak said, “but we haven’t been able to do any type of expansion.”

Kopczak said that BWI will also offer “a much better experience for customers” than Reagan, which he called “kind of a cramped facility.”
