UNION BRIDGE — The tiny Carroll County town of Union Bridge is eliminating a tax on manufacturers in hopes of making itself more attractive to businesses.
The Carroll County Times reports that the Town Council voted Monday to exempt manufacturing businesses from the personal property tax.
Mayor Perry Jones Jr. says Union Bridge and Sykesville are the only Carroll County towns that collect such a tax from manufacturers. Union Bridge has about 1,000 residents.
Perry says the tax on the town’s handful of manufacturing companies brings in just a couple thousand dollars a year.
He says he’s concerned that businesses looking to relocate might skip Union Bridge because of the tax.
