Carroll County seeks alternatives to incinerator

WESTMINSTER — Carroll County officials are seeking alternatives to participating in a waste-to-energy incinerator in neighboring Frederick County.

The Carroll County Times reported in its Tuesday edition that Frederick County has given Carroll County approval to investigate other trash-disposal methods.

Commissioner Doug Howard says the ideal solution is for the counties to go their separate ways.

Carroll had previously agreed to be a 40 percent partner in the project.

Carroll County sent Frederick County a letter in June suggesting they go their own ways. Frederick County replied on Thursday that Carroll may seek alternatives while Frederick looks for other partners.

Carroll would owe $3 million if Frederick cannot find replacement funding. The incinerator’s construction cost is estimated at nearly $368 million.
