Eye Opener: Port fears longshoremen will strike

President Barack Obama accepted the Democratic party’s nomination in Charlotte, N.C., Thursday, saying he needs more time to fix the fragile national economy.
Here’s a few state government headlines to go along with that national news:
- The Baltimore Sun reports longshoremen’s contract for East and Gulf ports expires at the end of September, and Maryland Port Authority officials are concerned about a strike amidst a record-setting year at the public terminals.
- The Washington Post reports that Gov. Martin O’Malley will start working out plans for his political future after November’s election.
- The Herald-Mail reports that Washington County will not help pay for capital improvement projects at its schools.
- The Gazette reports that a bevy of ballot questions could lead to long lines at Maryland polls on Nov. 6.
- The Annapolis Capital reports that the state will hold a hearing about utility companies’ practice of charging customers a fee, even during a power outage.
